Stop, Watch, and ROFL

I don’t watch much television.

Sorry, I don’t watch much scripted television. I probably down 15 hours of TV a week and all but 90 minutes of that is devoted to sports. (Curb and Mad Men).

But after receiving a text from Dan about a great new show from the creator of one of my favorite 90’s sitcoms “Just Shoot Me” (Steve Levitan) and starring one of my favorite 90’s sitcom actors (Ed O’Neill) I hit up bittorrent and downloaded the first four episodes in about an hour.

I now have a new favorite show in “Modern Family.”

modern family

It’s both hilarious and charming. The characters are all likable and flawed. The writing is incredibly tight and natural. The stories are clever and fresh. The actors are funny and subtle. The jokes appeal to comedy nerds and… everybody else. I’m so inspired and emotionally invested — and I’m only four episodes deep.

How the hell did Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd (not THAT Christopher Lloyd) take the basic premise of “A sitcom about a dysfunctional family!” and make it fresh again? Wasn’t that impossible? Aren’t I not supposed to like broad comedy’s that get great ratings? (See: Two and a Half Men) And yet, here we are!

All right, I’m done. Just go watch it. You obviously have free time. I mean, you’re reading my blog. You don’t even need bittorrent. Turns out every episode is on Hulu for free.

Best part of all, when the show becomes a huge success you can be one of those cool people that can say “Oh, man, I was watching that show right when it first came out! Back when shows were on televisions! And humans had to drive places. Anyhoot, I’m off to my pod. Good night earthling!”

“CAN I HAVE MY MONEY NOW?”
Oh yer and the copyright men should be at your door somewhere in the next 3 seconds.

I admittedly haven’t seen it yet, but the reviews I’ve heard from the comedy-nerd types have been quite the opposite of positive. I’ll still give it a shot at some point in the not too distant future, but this is the first thing I’ve heard that would make me want to watch it.

My favourite new show is definitely Community. I wasn’t expecting much from anything Joel McHale helmed, since he’s more than a bit of a tool. But the supporting characters are hilarious.

Ha I love David Spade. We share the same humor, and both use bittorent, we were made for each other, babe.

  10. John:

I agree completely. From the commercials I thought the show had a funny premise so I DVR’d the pilot to watch at a later time. So funny. I’ve been hooked on it since.

    WTF…Why The Face

  12. Brian:

Illegal downloading? Why would you resort to such criminal acts

  13. Megan:

I’m not much of a tv-watcher, but I was excited for Modern Family this fall, along with Community. I absolutely adore Modern Family, especially the Dad and his Ricky Gervais antics- awkward looks at the camera and blatant attempts to fit in- it really won me over. Community, though, I’m not too crazy about haha

  14. KC:

    I’ve got Gloria!

  15. Sam:

Hey amir who’s your fave character?

  16. Dipa:

I love this show too! You should watch Community on NBC too…i think its really funny also.
